Navigating the Energy Transition for a Sustainable Future in Pakistan: Edition III

Navigating the energy transition for a sustainable future in Pakistan: edition III is a two-day, open-enrollment course designed to tackle the critical energy challenges Pakistan faces today. This program is a continuation of the successful collaboration between the Centre for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP) and Princeton University, in partnership with the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy & Finance (JRCPPF) and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment (ACEE). Since 2023, this workshop series has fostered knowledge sharing on energy policy, with the aim of addressing Pakistan’s energy crisis through innovative, evidence-based solutions. This final edition will be held in Islamabad from January 15-16, 2025.

The final workshop in the series aims to provide participants with the knowledge and tools needed to reconcile Pakistan’s immediate energy demands with its long-term goals of transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon future.

Target Audience

The program is designed for a diverse group of professionals involved in energy and sustainability, including but not limited to:

  • Mid to senior-level policymakers
  • Representatives from power producers and regulators, including NEPRA
  • Key government officials from ministries such as Finance, National Disaster Risk Management Fund, and the Planning Commission of Pakistan
  • Academicians and researchers
  • Practitioners from the development sector, private enterprises, and non-profit organizations.

Teaching methods

The workshop will use a blend of case studies, simulations, expert panels, and hands-on group activities. Through interactive discussions and real-world data analysis, participants will explore Pakistan’s energy transition pathways and develop strategies to balance immediate needs with long-term sustainability goals.

What Participants Learn

Participants will gain valuable insights into crucial areas for navigating Pakistan’s energy transition. The workshop will equip them with the ability to conduct medium- and long-term demand forecasting, enabling them to anticipate the country’s future energy needs more effectively. They will also explore critical strategies for energy financing, learning how to address capital requirements and develop financial models to support Pakistan’s shift towards renewable energy. Beyond the electric power sector, the course will delve into decarbonization strategies, providing participants with a comprehensive view of how Pakistan can reduce carbon emissions across various sectors. Additionally, global best practices will be analyzed, helping participants understand how successful energy transitions in other countries can be adapted to Pakistan’s unique context.

Impact

Since the inception of this series in 2023, over 60 participants from a broad range of influential organizations have been trained through the first two editions of the workshop, including individuals from government entities, energy sector leading organizations, private sector and non-profit organizations involved in energy, and development and research organizations.
